Workshop Overview
Editors and peer reviewers judge a manuscript by its figures before reading the text. Poorly chosen plot types, blurry raster exports, inconsistent fonts, and cluttered layouts sink otherwise strong studies. This workshop teaches the scientific and visual rules of creating publication-ready, high-resolution figures across the industry's leading design and plotting tools.
1. Mastering the Tools: PowerPoint, Adobe Illustrator, BioRender, CorelDRAW & R
Adobe Illustrator & CorelDRAW: Vector path editing, precise multi-panel grid alignment, importing SVG/PDF plots from R/Python/GraphPad without losing resolution, and consistent stroke/font styling.
BioRender: Designing clear biological pathways, experimental schematics, and graphical abstracts that integrate seamlessly into multi-panel composite figures.
PowerPoint for High-Resolution Science: Configuring custom canvas dimensions, registry/export settings for true 300–600 DPI TIFF/PDF output, and rapid layout prototyping.
R (ggplot2, patchwork, cowplot): Generating reproducible, vector-native statistical plots ready for direct journal submission.
2. Choosing the Right Plot Type: Visual Decision Rules
Volcano Plots vs. MA Plots & Ranked Dot Plots: When to display effect size (log2 fold-change) against statistical significance (-log10 FDR) across thousands of features vs. highlighting mean expression abundance.
Volcano Plots vs. Heatmaps: Using volcano plots to summarize global differential expression thresholds vs. using clustered heatmaps to reveal sample-by-sample heterogeneity, co-regulated clusters, and batch patterns.
Heatmaps vs. Violin Plots & Box Plots: When a color-coded Z-score matrix obscures data spread — and when to switch to violin plots or box-and-jitter plots to show bimodal distributions, medians, quartiles, and individual biological replicates.
Line Plots & Error-Ribbon Plots: Best practices for time-series, growth curves, and dose–response kinetics (SD vs. SEM vs. 95% confidence intervals).
3. Typography, Colorblind-Safe Palettes & Journal Export Standards
Visual hierarchy, whitespace, consistent 6–8 pt sans-serif typography (Arial/Helvetica), and clear panel labeling (a, b, c vs. A, B, C).
Color theory for science: Viridis, Okabe–Ito, and ColorBrewer palettes; avoiding rainbow colormaps and red-green combinations that fail colorblind readers.
Meeting Nature, Cell, Science, and Elsevier artwork specifications: single-column (85–89 mm) vs. double-column (174–183 mm) widths, RGB vs. CMYK, vector EPS/PDF vs. 300–600 DPI LZW-compressed TIFF.
What you'll learn
- Assemble multi-panel figures using Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, BioRender, PowerPoint, and R/ggplot2
- Decide confidently when to use volcano plots vs. heatmaps, heatmaps vs. violin/box plots, and line plots
- Apply colorblind-safe palettes, journal-compliant typography, and clean visual hierarchy
- Export crisp vector PDFs/SVGs and 300–600 DPI TIFFs that pass journal artwork quality checks on the first try
Who should attend
- MSc, PhD, and postdoctoral researchers preparing figures for manuscripts, thesis defenses, posters, and grant proposals
- Wet-lab and computational biologists who want their data visualizations to look like top-tier journal publications
Before you join
- No graphic design background needed — templates, color palettes, and practice plot files are provided
