Workshop Overview

Starting your first research project or PhD can feel overwhelming when no one shows you how all the pieces fit together. This foundational workshop gives beginners a crystal-clear, end-to-end roadmap of the entire scientific research lifecycle — from reading your first review paper and formulating a testable hypothesis to designing experiments, analyzing data, creating figures, and publishing in a peer-reviewed journal.

1. Finding a Research Gap & Formulating a Testable Hypothesis

  • How to search and read scientific literature strategically (PubMed, Europe PMC, Google Scholar) without getting lost.

  • Distinguishing between exploratory observation and a sharp, falsifiable biological hypothesis.

  • Translating a broad hypothesis into 2–3 achievable Specific Aims for a dissertation or grant project.

2. Experimental Design, Controls & Reproducibility

  • Setting up bulletproof experiments: positive controls, negative controls, vehicle controls, and blinding.

  • Biological replicates vs. technical replicates — and how many samples you actually need for statistical power.

  • Organizing lab notebooks, sample metadata sheets, and raw data folders so nothing is lost months later.

3. Data Analysis, Visualization & AI Tools in Modern Biology

  • Connecting your experimental design to the right statistical test and clean data visualization.

  • Overview of modern computational & AI tools in biology (microbiome, genomics, structural biology, and literature synthesis).

4. Writing, Submitting & Navigating Peer Review

  • How a manuscript is assembled (Figures → Results → Methods → Introduction → Discussion → Abstract).

  • What happens after you click 'Submit': editorial screening, peer review, revisions, proofs, and publication ethics.

What you'll learn

  • Perform structured literature gap analysis and write a clear, testable hypothesis with specific aims
  • Design experiments with proper biological replicates, controls, and metadata organization
  • Understand how statistical testing, figure design, and manuscript writing fit together as one workflow
  • Avoid common beginner pitfalls that delay MSc dissertations and early PhD publications

Who should attend

  • BSc, MSc, and BTech/MTech students starting their dissertation or research internship
  • Newly joined JRF fellows and first-year PhD scholars across all life-science disciplines

Before you join

  • Designed for absolute beginners — no prior research or programming experience required
