Postdoctoral positions in the Hueschen lab (biophysics, cell biology, infection biology)
We seek outstanding postdoctoral candidates to join the Hueschen Lab at the University of California, San Diego. We are an interdiscplinary group at the interface of biophysics, cell biology, and infection biology. Put simply, our favorite questions are: how do parasitic cells and animals move, penetrate tissue, and change shape? We use microscopy and quantitative analysis, experimental approaches from cell and parasite biology, and physical and mathematical thinking. Current topics of interest include the dynamics and patterning of cytoskeletal proteins inside the parasitic protist Toxoplasma gondii, mechanisms of cell gliding motility, the mechanics of vasculature invasion by human parasites, and the mechanics of morphogenesis in the parasitic flatworm Schistosoma mansoni. Additional information: https://hueschenlab.biosci.ucsd.edu/.
The Hueschen Lab is part of the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology at UCSD and affiliated with UCSD Biological Physics. We enjoy a vibrant, deeply collegial research community with many opportunities for interaction and collaboration across the Biological Sciences departments, Physics, Health Sciences, and Bioengineering. Postdoctoral researchers are encouraged to attend our many seminar series and informal community events, present their work at departmental gatherings, and make full use of campus resources such as career development workshops and world-class shared research facilities.
Qualifications. Candidates should have received or expect to receive a PhD in biology, physics, bioengineering, or a related field, preferably with a conferral date between 2023 and 2025. Ideal candidates include those with training in (1) Toxoplasma gondii genetics or molecular / cell biology; (2) microfluidics and/or bioengineered vasculature or other organoid models; (3) Schistosoma biology; or (4) advanced fluorescence microscopy. More importantly, we seek driven individuals who are open to the challenge of crossing disciplinary boundaries and who will enjoy being a part of an interactive and supportive team.
To apply. Please email Dr. Christina Hueschen (chueschen@ucsd.edu) with the subject line “Postdoc Application” and include:
• A cover letter or email that summarizes your experience, contributions to science, and your research interests – and explains how these interests align with the Hueschen Lab’s work.
• CV with publication list.
• PDF copies of your 1-2 most significant publications or pre-prints.
• Names and contact information of 3 references.
It is an incredibly exciting time to work at the interface of biology and physics, applying new tools and approaches to understudied organisms that are major players in the global disease landscape (schistosomiasis, malaria). We hope that you’ll join the adventure!
Postdoc Positions in the Pasquinelli Lab of RNA Biology Research
Description
Postdoctoral research positions are available in the Pasquinelli Lab within the School of Biological Sciences at UC San Diego. The discovery that regulatory RNAs control almost every biological pathway has revolutionized our understanding of gene expression. Research in the Pasquinelli Lab focuses on the molecular mechanisms that control the expression and function of regulatory non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), such as microRNAs (miRNAs) and long ncRNAs. We primarily use C. elegans as a model animal system to study the roles of ncRNAs in development, stress, and aging within an endogenous context. The pathways we study are broadly conserved throughout animal phylogeny and relevant to understanding the role of ncRNAs in human physiology and disease. The Pasquinelli Lab aims to recruit motivated postdoctoral researchers with strong prior research experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, and bioinformatics. Please visit the Pasquinelli Lab website for more information.
Qualifications
• A Ph.D. in biology or related field
• No more than 2 years of previous postdoctoral research (i.e. within two years of doctoral degree conferment)
• Experience with standard and emerging molecular/ biochemistry and genetic approaches; experience with microscopy and bioinformatics skills are desired but not required
• Strong oral communication skills are required
• Interest and, ideally, experience in mentoring others
Research Environment
The Pasquinelli Lab is part of the Molecular Biology Department within the large and highly collaborative School of Biological Sciences at UC San Diego. Successful applicants will join a dynamic research environment that includes frequent interactions with other RNA, C. elegans, and aging labs and opportunities for collaboration within and outside the lab in addition to mentored development of an independent research project.
How to Apply
Please send your application to apasquinelli@ucsd.edu
Email applications should include:
• Cover letter summarizing previous research experience and a brief description of potential project interests and career goals

Pathogenic Bacteria / Brain Infections
Description
We are actively recruiting for a post doctoral position available immediately at UC San Diego. The project focuses on understanding how pathogenic bacteria cause brain infections, including meningitis, in zebrafish larvae and humans. The project is funded by NIH’s New Innovator Award and the Pew Biomedical Scholars Award. The goal is to use single nuclei RNAseq, in addition to other methods, to define the host genes that contribute to brain invasion in diverse cell populations in the zebrafish brain, including neuron subsets, endothelial cells, microglia, astrocytes, monocytes and neutrophils. These studies will contribute to a holistic understanding of pathogen invasion and inflammatory response, and provide mechanistic clues for invasion mechanisms. We use clinical isolates of human meningitis-causing pathogens for this work to ensure we are working with neuroinvasive strains. We use a variety of approaches including live confocal imaging, RNAseq, CRISPR/Cas gene editing in vivo and transgenesis in vivo. We are seeking highly motivated individuals with the ability to work independently. Using zebrafish to model human disease is a relatively new field, with the potential for making novel discoveries and launching an independent career.
Qualifications
Applicants should have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent title in biology and have a demonstrated record of productivity.
